Training Programs at the Ackerman Academy

The Academy is dedicated to the highest standards of training in dermatopathology and offers a wide array of academic opportunties to practicing physicians, medical students and residents, students and physicians from abroad, and even high school students.

Currently, we offer the following:

  • ACGME-accredited SUNY Downstate/Ackerman Academy fellowship in dermatopathology. Applications are open to those who are U.S. board-eligible or board-certified in dermatology or pathology (at time of fellowship).

  • AOA-accredited NYIT COM/Ackerman Academy Osteopathic fellowship in dermatopathology. Applications are open to those who are board-eligible or board-certified from the American Osteopathic Board of Pathology or the American Osteopathic Board of Dermatology (at time of fellowship).

  • Elective training in dermatopathology to medical students, residents, and practicing physicians, open to both U.S. and international trainees. (Typical duration is two (2) weeks to one (1) month.) Please submit your initial application no less than 3 weeks prior to proposed start date, and no more than 6 months prior to proposed start date. If you are an international visitor requiring a J-1 Visa, please apply under our Visiting Research Fellowship category. Please check if you will need a J-1 Visa PRIOR TO applying.

  • Visiting research fellowship in dermatopathology (not for board-certification) for physicians from abroad. (Typical duration is six (6) months to one (1) year.)

  • Less conventional, or informal training to those who may not be a direct fit for the aforementioned educational programs. Please inquire by sending an email to
